| i read a book about raising chickens the other day. apparently one must be VERY careful when introducing a new chicken into a coop. i guess no one, including chickens, likes it when a stranger comes into their circle. anyway, if a farmer wants to add a new chicken, he must bring the new chicken in a bag in the middle of the night while the other chickens are sleeping, and very sneakily creep the new chicken into its nest without disturbing the others. in the morning when all the chickens wake up, the chickens will see the new addition and think to themselves, "oh, since i didn't see her come in, she must have been here with us the whole time." the funny thing is, the new chicken wakes up in the morning and also thinks to herself, "oh, i must have been here the whole time" and goes along merrily in her day.

| sometimes i wonder what makes kids tick. is it the playdate they look forward to after school? is it seeking to be loved? is it the new toy in their treasure chest at home? is it wanting to be comfortable? is it the desire for new knowledge about the world?
well, i'm not sure what the answer to those questions are. but i know this, we are all just big kids. or rather, kids are mini-versions of us. we are WAY MORE similar to 5-year olds than we think.
it's been a hard year for me teaching the little ones. without disclosing too much, due to privacy reasons, and hopefully giving you a taste of what my career is like on a daily basis, here are two events from the day:
1. little girl uncontrollably cries when she realizes for the first time that she is black after a sad and semi-lengthy discussion about martin luther king, jr. keep in mind, i teach kindergarten.
2. a little girl admits to me that she found poop in her bed when she woke up. neither her nor her mom know how it got there. go figure.
